EISPARK OSTTIROL

Prehistory

The alpine guides Wurzer Matthias and Vittirio Messini , both born in Kals (East Tyrol), could acquire a wide range of experiences in ice climbing during their trips through North America.

In this eldorado for ice climbers there are countless ice climbing parks, both natural and artificial, which are very popular for top-athletes as well as for beginners. Reason enough to pick up the idea and start realising it in East Tyrol. Searching for an adequate venue, which not only had to be big enough, upland and shady, it also had to provide water close to it, we managed to find one in the "Tauerntal" nearby the "Wohlgemutalm" (Matreier Tauernhaus)

 Overall aim

East Tyrol offers everything an athlete's heart desires, from ski touring to ice climbing. In East Tyrol there are numerous ice waterfalls. Because of the shady and high lying valleys on the south side of the "Alpenhauptkamm", these ice waterfalls form early in the year and are little prone to foehn situations.Nevertheless a venue, a "mekka " for this scene is absent. That's what now has  happened to the ICE PARK OSTTIROL. For all, guests, beginners and pros, from the mountain rescue to school sports trips, we want to give every winter sports lover an easy and safe understanding of the special matter Ice.

 Phase of construction

The ice park project could be accomplished within a five- week building phase and was successfully opened on the 30 of January 2016 as part of the 1. Ice Festival East Tyrol.Already one year later a further sector could be finished within the 2. Ice Festival East Tyrol. Since then there are about 60 tours available with any level of difficulty for every ardent ice climber. An Eldorado for ice climbing freaks at its best. The sportsmanship is  "Bergsport Osttirol" with its founderSilvester Wolsegger among other several alpine guides. Responsible for maintenance and structure of the Ice park East Tyrol is the promoter "Alpinplattform Lienz" with the kind support of the Regions Management Osttirol.
